Venomous Snakes and Safety

Identifying Venomous Snakes

Venomous snakes often have distinct features such as a triangular-shaped head, elliptical pupils, and vivid color patterns. However, these traits are not always reliable for identification. The best approach is to familiarize yourself with the common venomous snakes in your region, like cobras, vipers, and coral snakes, and avoid handling any wild snake.

Safety Tips

  • Always stay on well-trodden paths when hiking or walking in nature.
  • Avoid placing your hands or feet into areas you can't see, such as holes, crevices, or thick underbrush.
  • Wear protective clothing like boots and long pants when in snake-prone areas.
  • Be extra cautious during early morning and late evening hours when snakes are most active.

What to Do if Bitten

  1. Stay calm and move as little as possible to slow the spread of venom.
  2. Call emergency medical services immediately for help.
  3. Keep the bitten limb immobilized and positioned slightly below the heart level.
  4. Do not try to suck out the venom, cut the bite area, apply ice, or use a tourniquet.
